Operation Buddy Project: Giving to the Emotionally Needy

I don’t need to tell you, it’s the time of year to go outside ourselves and give to the needy. Giving to charitable causes is a great thing–by all means, keep on giving. But I challenge you, my friends, to do another kind of giving–one that is much harder to make yourself do--take some time this holiday season to give to those that are emotionally needy. Yes, them. The ones that make you want to fill their stockings with coal. The ones that probably made Santa cry when they sat in his lap. The ones that make the Grinch look like Buddy the Elf.   I know, I know.  That’s a lot to ask, especially when the whole holiday thing is supposed to be filled with CHEER–not being around someone that makes you want to drown your own sorrows in heavily spiked egg nog.  But let me tell ya, Buddy the Elf was on to something…smiling was his favorite because he knew smiling is contagious.  If you keep smiling and being friendly to that grumpy person, after a while,  more than likely you will wear them down and they may just crack a smile themselves. On the 12th Day of Christmas…

my true love gave to me…  OK, now your brain is filled with that song, starting from whatever number pops into your head. (for me it’s always 9 ladies dancing.  I should probably get analyzed at some point to see why that is so…??) It is December!  The gift-giving countdown has begun!  Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, all of the above… ’tis that time of year when you start thinking about things to give and what you’d like to receive. Yeah, yeah, we all know it’s better to give and how great that feels–but what’s so darn bad about giving to yourself?? I heard mention of this song the other day and it got me thinking…at this time of year, as important and wonderful as it is to give to others, it’s especially important to give to yourself.  After all, you are the truest love you will ever find.  As much as you love your spouse, significant other, child, friend, chihuahua–in the end, YOU are the most important thing in your life.  Only you can truly make yourself happy or sad, busy or bored, feel loved or unloved. That is a big responsibility, isn’t it??  I think you ought to go out there and get yourself a gift...
